Ben “Fairlight” Edwards, professional herbalist, raconteur and wandering troubadour, was the outstanding star of this Friends’ event last Saturday morning. A large group of enthusiasts accompanied Ben on a walk from the Country Park Visitor Centre to Fairlight Head, through the gorse and honeysuckle and back along the access for all path.
Along the way Ben introduced us to various plants and shrubs indicating their uses in herbal medicines and popping various leaves and flowers into his thermos of hot water to brew a healthy and invigorating tisane.
Plants examined included bramble, nettle, cleavers, rose, honeysuckle, selfheal and elder. What had appeared at the start to be a fairly short walk easily occupied two long, fascinating hours with everyone agreeing that Ben should return next year for another extremely informative and thoroughly enjoyable herbal walk in the park.
