Ray is the recently appointed ‘Swift Champion’ for the SOS and the previous holder of that role, Audrey Wende, also came along to help answer questions at the end of Ray’s talk.
A DVD of the sound of swifts was playing as Friends arrived and this was followed by a most comprehensive talk about the life cycle of swifts and the amazing journeys they make each year to reach our shores from Africa. I don’t think many of us were aware that swifts spend all their life on the wing, even sleeping, the only time they come down to earth is when they nest.
Ray and Audrey declined any donations for the talk saying instead that they would prefer any money to go towards the erection of swift boxes in Hastings Old Town. Swifts have been seen and heard in the Old Town but it needs a volunteer/s to identify and monitor the buildings they are using to nest and then to approach the owners to see whether they would be amenable to a box being put up.
So it is up to us now. If you live in the Old Town and feel able to check the skies around dusk for swift activity please do let Ray know and he will be more than happy to mentor you. His email is: firstname.lastname@example.org
And please do let the committee know too!
