Autumn Migration Watch : Saturday 13th October 2018

The annual autumn migration watch is one of our most popular events and participants have been treated to some notable migration experiences in previous years.

However this year, and no doubt as a consequence of climate change, the days preceding the event featured strong southerly winds halting all migration.

Fortunately a few migrants did make an effort on the day of the event, mostly Linnets with about 100 heading west but otherwise just 30 Goldfinches and 20 high-flying and invisible Siskins moved east. 6 Swallows were around the cliffs and 3 lingering Chiffchaffs called from the bushes.

Although migration numbers were low, participant numbers were excellent at 26 plus our leader, Alan Parker, and two helpers. All-in-all a very enjoyable event despite the windy weather and our thanks to Alan for identifying all the birds seen and, even more importantly, heard.
